Despite their financial limitations, a number of independent bookstores in Indonesia have managed to grow quite vibrantly and are able to offer alternative choices for book lovers. Not just a place to buy and sell books, these independent bookstores are able to bring together book activists from various fields, serve as a place to create new discourses about the world of books, and form diverse communities of readers. In addition, independent bookstores which often use modest and small spaces in city corners seem like an anomaly amongst the massive growth of e-commerce platforms which is said to make booksales easier. In other words, independent bookstores have now become an important instrument in enthusiastically building Indonesia's book ecosystem. In this discussion session, we will not only discuss the importance of these independent bookstores, but also talk about the strategies that have been and can be applied by independent bookstore managers in building relationships with their readers.
