Small Shops, Big Impact The Resilience of Indonesia's Independent Bookstores MORE >> Despite their financial limitations, a number of independent bookstores in Indonesia have managed to grow quite vibrantly and are able to offer alternative choices for book lovers. Not just a place to buy and sell books, these independent bookstores are able to bring together book activists from various fields, serve as a place to create new discourses about the world of books, and form diverse communities of readers. In addition, independent bookstores which often use modest and small spaces in city corners seem like an anomaly amongst the massive growth of e-commerce platforms which is said to make booksales easier. In other words, independent bookstores have now become an important instrument in enthusiastically building Indonesia's book ecosystem. In this discussion session, we will not only discuss the importance of these independent bookstores, but also talk about the strategies that have been and can be applied by independent bookstore managers in building relationships with their readers. << LESS |

Exploring the Art of Riso Printing in a Post-digital World MORE >>
Since its inception in 1984, Riso has been a popular short-run press option in the era and was one of the last new print technologies to be standardized before the internet took off. The technology sits at the interface between analog and digital. Writer's Talk: The Layers of Nature MORE >> In her debut novel Die grüne Grenze, Isabel Fargo Cole placed the forests of the Harz Mountain not only as the natural setting of her story but as multilayered dimension where the-political, the-historical, the mythical, the-cultural happened and even clashed into one another. It is precisely these layers which will be delved into some depths in this session: what do we really talk about when we talk about the natural world. Obviously, with her years of activism and writing, Amalya Reza Oktaviani would provide interesting insights into this. The conversations with the two writers with different backgrounds will enrich our perspective of nature << LESS |

From Ancient Grains to Future Farms Exploring Traditional Ways for Food Sustainability MORE >> In the pursuit of ensuring national food security, the government has introduced various massive-scale programs in the form of food estates. Large areas of land have been cleared and cultivated to become national food barns. However, these mega projects have created many conflicts, whether with local communities or with mother nature itself. On the other hand, a number of food activists have carried out a series of movements to raise public awareness about alternative food sources, reducing our dependence on the market and the state. One of the ways food activists campaign for alternative food security is by learning and re-approaching the ancient knowledge of Indonesia's ancestors. In this session, we will learn more about the efforts in exploring traditional food knowledge to attain food security in the future. << LESS |

The poems will also connect the sense of humanity for those who are oppressed, showing how art is a medium that can convey messages of justice, peace, and sustainability. Poets from various countries (Ukraine, Iran, and Indonesia) and different generations will deliver litanies to comfort grief, as well as encouragement to fight for hope. By doing so, we can create an understanding of environmental importance and inspire children to take concrete actions for themselves and their environment. In this session, we will discuss environmentally conscious parenting styles, the availability of children's books that focus on environmental topics, and the government's role in designing education to face the ecological crisis. << LESS |

Our lives are becoming increasingly capitalistic in all dimensions. Meanwhile, traditionally, literature has communal roots. How does literature offer 'commons' and thinking about life together? Where do literature/literary actors build a 'cultural barn' based on togetherness, celebration of diversity, a sense of solidarity and a sense of belonging? What form does this 'commons' take? Can it break through the current world of literacy based on neoliberal structures? << LESS |

Food, Future, and Folklore Balancing Tradition and Nutrition MORE >> Today's urban Indonesians have high awareness of the importance of nutritional knowledge. In line with this awareness, more and more culinary products, culinary-related content, and food security movements are enriching people's knowledge about nutrition, both in modern and traditional cuisine. In this session, we will explore the combination of traditional and modern food knowledge and practices that promote good nutrition for our bodies. We will learn more about how our culinary practitioners process traditional culinary types that are nutritious, to be presented as culinary products that can be used by today's society to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Also, how do our creators or writers try to present more culinary themes to further enrich people's knowledge about our nation's culinary treasures. << LESS |
