Book Discussion: Indonesian Students and the International Anti-colonial Movement

A book discussion of Di Balik Bendera Persatuan (Klaas Stutje).

Di Balik Bendera Persatuan by Klaas Stutje tells the story of the struggle of Indonesian students in the Netherlands, such as Mohammad Hatta, Sam Ratu Langie, Achmad Soebardjo, and several other prominent students who were members of Perhimpoenan Indonesia (PI) during the interbellum period (1918-1939), between World War I and II. They took the opportunity to connect with the international anticolonial movement in Zürich, Paris, Berlin and Moscow, meeting famous anticolonial figures such as Jawaharlal Nehru (India) and Messali Hadj (Algeria). The book highlights their involvement in the League Against Imperialism and other global initiatives, showing that the rise of Indonesian nationalism was inspired by the international stage, as revealed through multilingual archives in Europe.

The world has entered an era of global warming and an intolerable climate crisis. The biggest contributing factor is the energy sector. This means that a clean energy transition is an urgent agenda that we must push together. However, the energy transition is not only about fulfilling global commitments to alleviate the climate crisis and reduce the rise in earth's temperature. Fair values must be present in the process. This is because the energy transition touches multidimensional and cross-sectoral aspects of society. Moreover, there are complexities in energy governance because it is intertwined with power holders and capital owners. The discussion “Towards A Just Energy Transition” is based on an article in the book Struggle for a Just Energy Transition: One Issue with Various Dilemmas will dissect the importance of clean energy transition policies that uphold human rights principles.

With her unique perspective as a biologist, activist, and cultural anthropologist, Farwiza will challenge audiences to envision a future where literature serves as both a mirror to our ecological crises and a beacon for transformative change.
